Day 7 – Refrigerator Art

It's not a river, it's purple.

It's not a river, it's purple.

Since I started this project I have, at times, become concerned that I am not worried enough, or thinking enough about creating “Art”.  I decided today that I needed to remind myself that this is a personal project whose goal is not to create “Art” with a capital “A”, my goal in this project is not to let myself succumb to all the pressing things which might come before photography on a daily basis.  For this project, it’s enough to take a few minutes, take a picture, and get it posted.  That’s all I’m asking of myself.  So, today I decided to take inspiration from my refrigerator art collection, supplied by my nephews.  I was sitting next to the three-year old as he painted this picture for me, and I asked him if the horizontal streak at the bottom was a river, to which he succinctly replied, “No, it’s purple.”  That’s my new motto about photography.  When I start to get anxious over whether something is “right”, I am just going to remind myself, “It’s not a river, it’s just purple.”   It’s enough to be purple.

Day 6

The making of a great american snack- Rice Krispie treats!

Still going strong!

Day 4

Day 4

Okay, so I’m late with posting, but I stayed on target with at least one pic a day- cross my heart.  I love the image from Day 4, it’s this really great fire hydrant.   I drive by it every time I visit my parents and I always tell myself I need to stop and take a picture.  I know, a little bit weird perhaps, but the colors are so striking, I’m very drawn to the turquoise/red combination.

Maybe it could turn into a series…fire hydrants through the seasons…

With my image for Day 5, I actually felt a bit limited by my 50mm lens.  I was in the parking garage this morning and the sky was incredibly clear, as I was looking across the city I noticed that there was a guy hanging off the church steeple in the distance.  You can see him just above the tree branches in the posted pic.  I would have loved to have been able to zoom in a bit further and get a little closer to the action.

Day 5

50-50-50 equipment

I have had a few people ask what 50mm lens I am using for my 50-50-50 project. I’m using the “nifty fifty”, the “plastic fantastic”, also known as Canon’s 50mm/1.8 II. Great value and makes for a really lightweight walk-around lens.

Day 3 of 50

Reflective of my mood and the weather.  Gray and dull with a bit of orange to remind me it is still fall.

Day 2

Day 2 - Mardi Gras remembered
Day 2 – Mardi Gras remembered

New Orleans came up in discussions today, and I began to wax nostalgic about the three years I spent living there.  I spent the afternoon thinking about eating beignets at Cafe du Monde, across the street from the cathedral, watching the artists, street peformers, and palm readers that ringed the square.  You just can’t get a good Po’ boy anywhere else.

I have never experienced anything like the wall of humidity that hits you as soon as the flight attendants unlocks the airplane door upon arrival at MSY.

It is a city of incredible and random live music, go-cups, decadent food, a bastion of conservative Catholic and Baptist churches, and the home of the most hedonistic of celebrations.  I managed to survive three Mardi Gras celebrations myself, and some of the loot I carried back to Delaware with me was the subject for Day 2 of my 50 day project.  New Orleans can certainly throw a party.

I have only been back to New Orleans once since Hurricane Katrina.  In the year after she hit, I returned for a friend’s wedding.  A city that had always felt alive and bustling felt empty.  Houses were still spraypainted with “looters will be shot” warnings.  I hope it’s better now.  I hate to think of that great city still being that quiet, I prefer to remember her as she was when I lived there, pre-Katrina.  It might be time to plan another trip, maybe add some more beads to my collection….

Day 1

Day 1 of the 50/50/50 Project
Day 1 of the 50/50/50 Project

Yesterday I noticed there were 50 days left in 2009, including today, so I decided to create a personal project for myself.  50 photos in 50 days using only my 50 mm lens.  My main goal is to give myself some structure.  Now that my portrait photography class at DCAD is over, I don’t want to let myself get lulled into being “too busy” to take pictures as Thanksgiving and the whirl of the holidays are upon us.

It also dovetails nicely with my desire to give my blog a kickstart.  I have been reading, researching, and comparing blog options, and am to the point where I just need to jump in and start doing.   So over the next 50 days, I’ll have no excuses not to be posting pics and twiddling with my blog layout.  All feedback, on both blog and photos, is appreciated.  I’m even taking requests, I may have a day when I will be stumped for inspiration.
